A friend's music collective dublab has been putting on First Fridays at The Natural History Museum in LA for six years now. On the first friday of every month, The Natural History Museum opens its doors to DJ's, bands, bottles of wine and beer, and fans of those things for an inspiring, fun evening. If you get there early enough, you can take part in scientific discussions or go on a custom curatorial tour through their exhibits. Later in the evening you get to listen to live music in a long hall lined with amazing dioramas filled with your closest friends from the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic Eras. The best part? The backdrop for the stage is the mother of all dioramas, complete with rolling green hills, huge replicas of wooly mammoths traversing plains, and snow capped mountains behind it all.
A couple summers ago, I got to see The Dodos perform at First Fridays. There couldn't have been a better way to see to them play. Matter of fact, I saw them again at Echoplex, and it just wasn't the same. I flew first class. Economy will never be ok again.
First Fridays are getting so popular that they're selling out weeks ahead of time. I bought two tickets four weeks ago for tomorrow night, and I just remembered that I have them. score! Tomorrow, Everest and Deer Tick are playing.
Oh, and all you LA haters out there? You're just not looking in the right places.
