LCD Soundsystem "Shut Up and Play the Hits"
I had the good fortune of going to the last LCD Soundsystem concert at Madison Square Garden. Below is the trailer for a documentary they made of the 48 hours surrounding the show. It gives me chills for 95% of the piece, then it unfortunately takes a turn to make the doc look like a retail plug for James Murphy's solo project. But whatever, it's still going to be amazing.

Like Crazy trailer
Described on a blog as falling somewhere between Blue Valentine and (500) Days of Summer, Like Crazy was the Grand Jury Prize winner for Best Picture at Sundance. Good trailer.
Last night I saw The Future (see below), and I'm 99% sure that at least some of the exteriors were shot right by my place in Silverlake. And now Like Crazy looks like a postcard for my new neighborhood.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trailer
Cool trailer for Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Cut by David Fincher himself, it doesn't have a lot of the trailer conventions, leaving a music video experience with some fun copy at the end. But it's compelling and manages to tell a tiny bit of story, albeit with a cover of an overused cue.
Swagger!

Beginners
Focus Features has done it again. Beginners, with Ewan McGreggor and Christopher Plummer, looks like a gem.

Peep World
It's a big day at Helms-a-Lee! I got my first trailer finish. I've finished theatrical TV spots, but this is my first piece that'll play on the silver screen. It's for IFC's "Peep World" and it went live on yahoo movies today. Stay tuned to find out what (limited, limited) movies it'll play in front of.

Happy Inception Day
Two good new trailers. Excited to see both movies. Writing in sentence fragments.
I'm not going to see Inception this weekend, but I'm looking forward to it next week. Instead, I'm going to Vegas to celebrate Gary's 30th birthday. That'll make it four 30th birthday celebrations and a 4th of July in a seven week stretch. This weekend is going to be a blast, but I am really looking forward to having a lazy, healthy weekend or four. Maybe sailing this weekend. Or perhaps I'll finally hole up with The Wire DVDs.
re. the Social Network trailer - they nail the zeitgeist. In the front end, they deliver a well crafted iteration of the cliché 'shared human experience' montage, but they show how sad and desperate the 21st century version can be. Post that flattering angle of yourself from above, or better yet, 3/4 and above, update for attention, hope for acceptance. The back end of the trailer is powerful in its restraint. It's the story of an awkward 19 year old nerd trying to make friends and get laid. But he changes the way humans relate in the process!
re. the second trailer - I can't believe they casted Zack Galifianakis for Iron Man 3.

Lost Angels - Skid Row Documentary
Most documentaries about communities/issues like Los Angeles' Skid Row feel like they're shot from a safe distance, peering down with a long lens, or even worse, they feel like an invasion. Lost Angels couldn't be any different. Thomas Napper, the director, establishes a rapport with his main subjects, allowing us to get inside their world, which actually turns out to be much more complex than Pras would lead you to believe [ugh]. Yes, there are crippling problems with drugs, violence, and mental illness, but there's also community, family, and vulnerability. There's a real dignity and respect in the way their stories are told.
I cut a pro bono trailer for Thomas a couple months ago. It was a great project to be involved in. There's a screening downtown tomorrow night. You (Art, Ryan, I'm fairly certain you two are still the only people who read this thing) should come. Friday the 25th, 7:45 pm at the Regal in LA Live. 300 free tickets, first come first serve.
It's nice, there's a little buzz - I'm running across our trailer everywhere. Here's Huffington Post's take on the film.
Update: ok, so I couldn't do it. The version of the trailer, for various reasons, that finished is not my favorite. So I took it down.

Greenberg
I saw Greenberg Friday night with friends. It was fantastic.
I find the new, calm, wise Ben Stiller very much likable. Stiller The Grey.
