Indie Game: The Movie

Looks like a compelling story.  Great music cue by Jim Guthrie.

Eames: The Architect and the Painter

Just watched the Eames documentary.  Good stuff.  What up 901 Washington Blvd?!?

A screenshot of a note from Ray to Charles (I think it's from her to him, not the other way around).  Way to raise the bar, Eames.

Jazz on a Summer's Day

Venice is going to feel like summer (79 and sunny) and look like summer (I'm going sailing) this weekend.

The 1958 Newport Jazz Festival documentary Jazz on a Summer's Day is a gem.  I first saw it at Luke's on NYE 2008, as he and I readied ourselves for a dance party at The Echo.  It's on Netflix streaming and YouTube in it's entirety.  Here's an excerpt with Thelonious Monk, lots of dapper hipsters, and purdy sailboats.

LCD Soundsystem "Shut Up and Play the Hits"

I had the good fortune of going to the last LCD Soundsystem concert at Madison Square Garden.   Below is the trailer for a documentary they made of the 48 hours surrounding the show.  It gives me chills for 95% of the piece, then it unfortunately takes a turn to make the doc look like a retail plug for James Murphy's solo project.  But whatever, it's still going to be amazing.

Shinya Kimura, motorcycle engineer

I posted this video a couple years ago, but I thought about it tonight and it's worth a repost.

A bike should look good on its own, but it is incomplete until somebody rides it.

Happy Friday!

Here's a nice vignette on specialty chocolate makers Mast Brothers and their cacao suppliers in the Dominican Republic.  I'm pretty sure I've seen their chocolates at Venice's Local 1205.  Also, Mast brother, your gf is super cute.  Also, great cue - Tesfa-Maryam Kidane's "Tezeta."

Up There - Hand Painted Murals

This is a good little documentary on the fading art of hand painted advertising murals. I love that we still have a lot of these LA.

Up There is a nice slice of life with a compelling story, and the cinematography is gorgeous - hit pause, and you're probably looking at a viable, printable photograph. However, the same guy directed, DP'd, and edited the piece, and this is a prime example of why you shouldn't try to do it all. The edit isn't near the level of the photography and direction. That being said, this is very much worth your 10 minutes!
