Trailer critic on my Madagascar 3 Teaser Trailer

At the end of the day, this is who I have to answer to.

Ice Cube on Eames

Part of Pacific Standard Time, Ice Cube talks about LA - the good, the bad, the ugly.  I love it.  He's kind of making fun of himself, and he's kind of making great insights.

NY subway string instrument

So cool.  Video below, but going to www.mta.me is better.

At www.mta.meConductor turns the New York subway system into an interactive string instrument. Using the MTA’s actual subway schedule, the piece begins in realtime by spawning trains which departed in the last minute, then continues accelerating through a 24 hour loop. The visuals are based on Massimo Vignelli’s 1972 diagram.

cultural artifacts from this weekend

Here are a couple things that came out 11.11.11.

German set designer and video artist Michael Konig put together this breathtaking time lapse with stills sent down from the International Space Station from August to October.

Also, Adam Sandler dressed up like a girl and talked in silly voices.

Steady as she goes.

my first baby moon

We threw a baby moon for Art this weekend at my sister's Big Bear cabin. Big bromance.

I put the video below together on my iPhone. Fifteen years ago, telephones were screwed to the kitchen wall, the user was tethered to that wall by a curly cord, and the phone's function was one fold. Now, you can shoot and edit with titles, transitions and music, your own HD video montage, upload it to the internets, and send it to your friends - on your telephone!! That shit cray.

Cheers to Art, Karla, and future lil Ms. St. Germain.

Even though I use a computer to put trailers together, I feel camaraderie with these folks.

Explosions in the Sky Poster Process

A general rule about the guy at Helms-a-Lee: he loves the process.

Here's a timelapse video of an artist creating a poster for Explosions in the Sky.   Sooo cool.  And so as not to spoil the ending, you can click here to see the final poster high res after you watch the video.

Norval Sinclair Marley

"I don't have prejudice against meself. My father was a white and my mother was black. Them call me half-caste or whatever. Me don't dip on nobody's side. Me don't dip on the black man's side nor the white man's side. Me dip on God's side, the one who create me and cause me to come from black and white."  -Bob Marley

Mina Tindle

Mon dieu.  You could stuff a basket full of fluffy kittens and Gizmo with the Jerry McGuire kid's glasses on, and it wouldn't be as adorable and charming as Parisian Mina Tindle.  Oh, and, good song, too.

28 September 2011

One more. Gang Starr's DJ Premier, Mos Def, Black Thought, Eminem in a BET Awards bumper.

This is just silly.

Shabazz Palaces

One more track.  Shabazz Palaces is Digable Planet's Butterfly's new project out of Seattle.

Federer: Mozart and Metallica

Le Swisse!  Good luck this weekend, Federer.  In honor of a push for a 17th Grand Slam title, here's David Foster Wallace's 2006 article on the religious experience of watching Roger Federer play for NYT's Play magazine.

"The thing with Federer is that he's Mozart and Metallica at the same time, and the harmony's somehow exquisite."

Philippe's

Fun little history of Philippe's, our historic downtown French Dip restaurant.  An excerpt:

Opened in 1908 by one Philippe Mathieu, the "French Dipped Sandwich" stumbled into history one day in 1918. While making one of his signature hearty sandwiches, Mathieu clumsily dropped a sliced French roll into a still-hot pan, soaking in its natural roast juices. The customer offered to eat the food anyway, loved it, and returned the following day, this time with friends, requesting more dipped sandwiches. Whether it was Mathieu's French heritage, the French roll itself, or the fact that the customer’s name was Officer French, the exact details matter little. On this day, the “French Dipped Sandwich” became official.

Quoddy

Just one more digital short. This one's a vignette on craftsman Dan Mailette, who sews shoes at Quoddy. I have a pair of Quoddy's, and this video shows you why they're just a great pair of shoes, and why one would be willing to spend a few extra bucks on them.

Wefi Surfboards

Digital SLR-shot, vimeo.com-delivered short on a guy who shapes wood surfboards with centuries old techniques and tools.

22 August 2011

Here's a nicely shot, nicely put together day in the life of a bicycle. It gets all Wall-E / Iron Giant at the end, which isn't a bad thing. I also like how our protagonist is nearsighted, making everything further than his spokes blurry.

Kites, WWF, nephews

The fam visited on Saturday. Farmer's Market goodies, pro wrestling, body surfing, flying kites, and swimming at sunset were all parts of the equation. Hit play below for a soundtrack for the pics. Just ignore the "oui, plus fort [and sexy time sounds]" part at the end. naughty, naughty Brigitte.

Happy Friday!

Ok, one more diptych.

I have a hot date this weekend. With my nephews. Their mom, my brother, my folks and I are flying kites with them. It'll be the inaugural launch of Bryn's new kite, which he needed to get after flying my childhood kite this summer. *le sigh

what the font?

And my fourth and last weekend diptych.

It's not just that the Drive font and color is a rip off, it's also that the 80s neon Budweiser /Miami Vice / T&C Surf signage look just doesn't suit the tone of this gritty, edgy film.
